Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Regenerative Medicine, PRP?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a regenerative medicine technique used to treat musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain. Commonly treated injuries include osteoarthritis, tendonitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, and other soft tissue injuries. PRP can be a helpful alternative to surgery or long-term medication use.

The procedure involves drawing a vial of blood from the patient and then placing it in a centrifuge, which spins the blood at a high speed to separate and concentrate the platelets. Platelets are then injected into the injured area(s). Platelets are rich in growth factors which may assist in stimulating tissue repair by enhancing healing in reducing inflammation.

What is BHRT?

BHRT stands for Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. It’s a treatment that uses hormones that are chemically identical to the ones your body naturally produces. BHRT is commonly used to relieve symptoms related to hormonal imbalances, such as those that occur during menopause, perimenopause, and andropause (sometimes called “male menopause”).

Bioidentical hormones can help improve energy, mood, sleep, mental clarity, libido, and more. They’re often derived from natural plant sources and customized to fit your body’s specific needs, making them a personalized alternative to traditional hormone therapy.

If you're experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, BHRT may be an effective option to help you feel like yourself again.

What is Osteopathic Medicine?

Osteopathic medicine emphasizes a holistic approach to healthcare.   There are 4 Tenets of Osteopathy:

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind and spirit.

  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance.

  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach to diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness and injury. OMM is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as musculoskeletal pain and joint dysfunction, as well as to improve overall health and mobility.  It is a gentle, noninvasive approach such as stretching, massage, manipulation to help restore proper alignment to the body structures to improve function and optimize healing.

What is Hyaluronic acid?

A hyaluronic acid (HA) injection is a treatment to relieve pain and improve mobility in patients with osteoarthritis. It is sometimes referred to as a viscosupplementation (“visco”) because it supplements the natural synovial fluid of the joint, which can become thinner and less effective due to arthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in joint fluid that helps lubricate and cushion the joint. When injected, it can:

  • Improve joint lubrication

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Enhance shock absorption

  • Relieve pain and stiffness

What is cupping?

Cupping is a therapeutic technique that uses gentle suction to lift the skin and underlying tissues, enhancing circulation, reducing muscle tension, and supporting the body’s natural healing response. Unlike massage, which applies pressure by pushing down into the muscles, cupping works by lifting up, creating space and encouraging blood flow in a different way. This approach is often better tolerated by patients who are sensitive to deep pressure or traditional massage.

What is Diagnostic Ultrasound?

Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues. It is commonly used in sports medicine and orthopedics to assess injuries, inflammation, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

It has several benefits including:

  • Real-Time Imaging: Allows dynamic assessment of movement and function.

  • High Resolution: Provides detailed images of soft tissues that may not be as clear on X-rays, MRIs, and other imaging.

  • No Radiation: A safer alternative to CT scans.

  • Cost-Effective: More affordable than MRI while providing excellent diagnostic accuracy.

  • Guidance for Procedures: Used to guide injections (e.g., PRP, steroid) for precision and effectiveness.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to promote circulation, relieve muscle tension, and reduce inflammation. Practitioners use tools made of jade, horn, or stainless steel to apply firm strokes along the skin, often in areas of pain or stiffness. This process can cause temporary redness or petechiae (small red spots), which is believed to help release toxins and improve blood flow.

In sports medicine and rehabilitation, gua sha is often used to aid recovery from soft tissue injuries, improve mobility, and enhance muscle function. It is sometimes referred to as "instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization" (IASTM) in Western medicine.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique used to treat muscle pain and dysfunction by inserting thin, solid needles (similar to acupuncture needles) into trigger points or tight bands within muscles. The goal is to release muscle tension, improve blood flow, and reduce pain.

Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy flow (Qi), dry needling is based on Western medicine principles, specifically targeting neuromuscular dysfunction. Many athletes and active individuals find dry needling effective for reducing muscle tightness and speeding up recovery. It can be used to treat conditions like:

  • Muscle knots and trigger points

  • Sports injuries

  • Chronic pain (e.g., back pain, neck pain, or headaches)

  • Tendonitis and tendinopathy

Do you take insurance?

Yes. We are in-network with Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and select commercial plans through Independence and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. For all other insurance carriers, services are considered out-of-network and will be provided on a self-pay (cash) basis.

Please be aware that certain advanced treatments—including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), and compounded medications—are generally not covered by insurance plans.

Our practice is designed to offer longer, more personalized visits that prioritize your individual needs without being constrained by insurance limitations. For out-of-network patients, we can provide itemized superbills that you may submit to your insurer for potential reimbursement.
